Duties of Community Police Officer
The Community Policing unit was created in February 2009 under the direction of Colonel Ronald E. DaSilva. The goal of the position was to reach out to the community and educate residents about the function of the police department as well as to help residents solve various quality of life problems that may arise.
The community police officer serves many roles in the community, including the following:
Establishes & promotes crime preventionincluding neighborhood crime watch groups
Conducts public education programs including programs at the town’s seven public and private elementary schools
Assists the towns human services and housing complexes with various issues that arise
Works with the Town Department of Recreation to establish youth activities and programs
Assists the Detective Captain with supervision, monitoring, and community notifications regarding sex offenders in the community. Actively supervises the offenders with the Kent County Probation Sex Offender Specific Unit
Actively supervises high-risk offenders on probation in the community with Kent County Probation
Implements and arranges child seat installation checkpoints throughout the community to educate parents on the importance of properly installing child safety seats.
