Citizens of Coventry.... Be on the lookout for the following SCAM
On 05/03/2010 patrols responded to a call for two suspicious subjects soliciting for money. The responding officer located the suspicious subjects on Tiogue Ave. The subjects were identified as a Hispanic male and Hispanic female. The subjects told the responding officer that they were asking citizens for donations to assit them with the burial of their child. The subject showed images of their premature son who died shortly after birth. The subjects were in possession of a cremation certificate dated 12/20/08. They were also in possession of a small wooden box which contained some sort of ashes. According to reports these subjects stated that they needed to raise a certain amount of money and that an organization called "Angel Click" will assit them with the remaining balance for the burial.
According to the responding officer he informed them that they could not solicit without first obtaining a permit and they were sent on their way. Upon further investigation it was learned that the same subjects were responsible for seeking donations in Cranston on 09/05/09, 09/09/09, in North Providence on 01/29/10, in Pawtucket in 02/21/10 and recently in Warwick on 05/02/10. In each event the subjects used the same story about attempting to raise money for their son's burial expense.
This department has learned from a police report that a female with the same name as that located in Coventry did have a child that died. According to the report the childs body was cremated and the remains were sent to Puerto Rico.
According to these reports the subject used the same story to obtain money under false pretenses. The subjects have been identified and both have extensive criminal histories. If you made a donation to one of these subjects please contact the Coventry Police and ask for either Detective Harris or Officer Nelson.
